Restoration uses similar tools to mastering, to extract specific qualities from an old or damaged audio file. Often the content is valuable or private, needing care and attention at all stages including documentation.

Tape machines include a Tascam professional cassette machine, Studer, Tascam and Teac open reel machines, Panasonic DAT plus a Technics turntable. Or you can bring your own playback device and connect it to the studio.

Audio is passed through Apogee converters into Pro Tools Ultimate for editing and restoration with a comprehensive set of plugins. I can export to any well known audio file format or make a standard audio CD of the final product as long lasting hard copy.

Forensic audio often needs the most extreme use of signal processing, bending things to the limit to extract the words from usually very poor recordings. It's the opposite of music mastering - we just need the meaning pure and simple - no subtlety or ambiguity is wanted. I'll use any tool that works, (including AI only if it doesn't make things up), to bring it in.

Like with mastering I feel a special responsibility when doing restoration work. Often my contribution is, being real, the last chance to make something old or historic to be playable in the future. Or to uncover a truth that nobody else could hear.
